Four members of Amputees Across America cycling group completed the Dothan area of their journey across this great country this morning. Abel Cruz, Doc Milligan, Bill Hansbury, and Jeff Martin, all with lower extremity prosthetics in place, bicycled down E. Main Street to HealthSouth as part of their tenth annual 3500 mile trek across America. Escorted by Dothan Police Department and accompanied by Mayor Mike Schmitz, the riders were greeted at HealthSouth by staff, patients, former patients, and local cycling club members with a small celebration. Each of the cyclists shared his experiences and stories of their abilities to continue living healthy, active, fulfilling lives, despite the obstacle of an amputation. In honor of their dedication and goal to increase public awareness of amputees as active participants in high-intensity activities, Mayor Schmitz presented the group with a proclamation indicating today, July 8, 2011, as Amputees Across America Day from the City of Dothan. Various HealthSouth Rehabilitation Hospitals across America have sponsored this ride every year. This year the riders left HealthSouth Tustin Rehabilitation Hospital in California on June 1st. They are set to conclude the trip in Vero Beach, Florida on July 22, 2011. Mr. Jeff Martin requested special prayers to go out to their founding member, Joe Sapere, who on the Texas portion of their trip this year, developed some cardiac problems and subsequently had a stroke and thus was unable to ...
